“I just want to say... that over the years... I've come to regard you as... people... I met. I'd better just go, OK?” - Seb Patrick

John Hoare / 11.01.07 / 12:48 pm

What the fuck is this?

I’ve only just noticed it, when Craig pointed it out on the commentary - what the fuck is that on the left of Kryten?

Kryten, stood next to... what?

It looks like something Cat-related to me, but it’s never mentioned anywhere, and I’ve not seen it anywhere else either. Anyone got any ideas?

I always assumed it was a pinball machine or some sort of arcade unit. I know I’ve seen them scattered around in other scenes during the first two series, but I can’t remember where…

I assume they ditched them in later series, as a 23rd (21st? 22nd?) century ship is not likely to carry a large amount of 1980s entertainment on board.

Gah! Yes! Of course! You’re right! It’s just the angle of it and the weird design that flummoxed me, but you’re absolutely right.

…God, I feel stupid. Move along, nothing to see here.

It’s a good point, though, it is something that could take you by surprise when re-watching the episodes. I mean, they’re never made totally obvious in any episodes, yet you’d think they’d make a big deal of a piece of set dressing like that, as it can’t have been cheap.

It’s almost as if some misguided soul brought them to liven up series 2 and Rob, Doug and Ed did their best to hide them away, as it just dates the setting far too much.

The picture on it looks like a medical diagram of the female reproduction system. Could it be a vagina related arcade game?

Resident Ovary?

If that’s a vagina, then I’m a…

er…

then I’m a [insert something absurd and humorous here. No, not there, in this blank]. Trust me on this; I actually have one.

I’d play that. But I worry what the sun at the bottom is supposed to represent…

The clock radio in Thanks for the Memory is another thing that looks a bit weird now. As is the BBC Micro keyboard in Bodyswap. But the thing is, it never bothers me when watching the show - I’ve already got it in my head that I’m watching a BBC sitcom from 1988/9, so I expect that kind of thing. Same with the BBC Micro appearing in Who

EDIT: That’s play Resident Ovary. Not with Arlene’s vagina.

I’ve seen one very close up, but it always looks blurry from that angle. I can’t see what’s going on.

I have one too, in a jar by my bed. It talks to me. It tells me to do things I don’t like.

What about that triangular video tape in Better Than Life?! Jesus Christ!

Triangular videocassettes, anyone?

Incidentally, if I could own ANY prop from the series (by which I mean small props, not models or costumes or anything), then the triangular tapes would probably be pretty high on the list…

The weird thing about the triangular videos is - and I think someone brought this up on here recently, but I can’t remember who - is that there’s some *weird* stuff going on in that scene.

There’s triangular videos. There’s normal videos. And then Gordon is on a CD!

Red Dwarf doesn’t paint a very positive view of the future when it comes to format wars…

>Resident Ovary?

That, sir, brings to mind a host — a whole host — of strange images.

As if we didn’t have enough trouble with Grand Theft Auto and its Hot Coffee mod…

I for one would want one of those pin-badge-thingys Rimmer wore from around Series III onward. And not just because Chris Barrie had worn them =P .

Hoare: …God, I feel stupid. Move along, nothing to see here

While you’re suitably humble, will you fix it so that http://ganymede.tv goes to the site proper, rather than a c. 1995 redirect prompt? Hmmm….

Red Dwarf doesn’t paint a very positive view of the future when it comes to format wars…

What, you expect them ever to sort things out? What’ll happen is that the people who make Blu-Ray and the people who make HD-DVD will fall out, making four factions, then the nextgen will make eight, then…

There you go. ganymede.tv is slightly less shit.

Iorek82 / Thu, 2007-01-11 17:14 / #

The first two series’ really are fantastic, aren’t they? I love all the random stuff they threw in for series 2 to (supposedly) give the sets more colour and variety. It’s a shame they couldn’t include the arcade machine in the story somewhere.

What is it *doing* there anyway?

Is it something Lister added after the accident to have something to do? Or were they always there, for the Red Dwarf crew to play at breaks? Isn’t a corridor an odd place to have a fruit machine?

Iorek82 / Fri, 2007-01-12 03:02 / #

> Isn’t a corridor an odd place to have a fruit machine?

Let’s face it, it’s either gonna be in the corridor, the bunk room, the drive room or…the Observation Dome…
