Mike was hoping that the series 8 Red Dwarf model flyover footage would be in there. Think they’re including an interview with him they did for the 8th series DVD but never used as well.

THEY. WILL. NOT. STOP. TEASING. US!

This DVD set is awesome stuff.

When they showed the footage of the long Model flyover, they said it was planned to be on the Series VIII release. But it seems only right they put on the ReMastered set for obvious reasons. I was disappointed that it wasn’t on the VIII DVD, so I kept the footage I had of it from DJ. Then the Remastered boxset was announced and I felt less guilty knowing there will be a full quality version available to everyone.

> Mike was hoping that the series 8 Red Dwarf model flyover footage would be in there.

I don’t think that footage was for Series VIII - it was shot specifically for the remastered closing sequence. BBC Vis-FX didn’t have any involvement with VIII, I don’t think. (The footage was delivered for Seires VIII, though, along with Series I to VII - we just elected to leave it with the appropriate release.)

> Think they’re including an interview with him they did for the 8th series DVD but never used as well.

I think I’ve said this somewhere else, but yep, we did ask Mike about the remastered during his Series VII DVD interview, and his responses have been really useful in separating between ‘ship design’ and ‘CGI animation’, and showing how the Dwarf design evolved.

Sorry yes, it was the remastered stuff, of course he wasn’t working on 8.

Can I just say that if I had the money I would fund the movie right now. That is all.

Re: Alan Titchmarsh; well done again on the research John.

So infax wet dreams come true!!! Marvellous.

Daytime UK (14th Dec 1990) - “ITEM 1:TV WRITERS:Doug NAYLOR & Rob GRANT chat to Alan(dur7.20/1.50 in)”. That’s Alan Titchmarsh, BTW. What a fucking bizarre interview that must have been. Weirdly, this is exactly at the time of recording Red Dwarf IV - White Hole was recorded the night before - so it’s very possible there might be some interesting insights into that series.

WOO HOO!!!!

Anyone else really like the CGI Cargo Bay attempt? Not sure it would have fit in the episode very well if it was the only time we were to see it, but to see it now just as a one off I think it does a good job of showing some of Red Dwarf’s true size.

Phil's picture

Phil / Sat, 2007-08-11 14:17 / #

I’m not a fan of it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy it’s included here. But on its own merit…I dunno. It doesn’t convince me. It’s no more impressive than the rest of the extraneous CGI.

Of course, I haven’t seen it in motion, yet. It could potentially be really cool…it’s just that the screengrab doesn’t do much for me.

The Disillusionist's picture

Suppose I just find it a more interesting change than a CGI scutter mincing about in the foreground. Then again, if they chose to include the scutter but not this, perhaps it really is poor in motion. Still, it’s another thing that makes me want a free roaming Red Dwarf video game…

>I just find it a more interesting change than a CGI scutter mincing about in the foreground.

Ha. Well said.

Though Andrew said (somewhere) that it turns out that those foreground skutters weren’t CGI at all…something covered in the documentary I’m sure.

Either way, your point holds.

>Still, it’s another thing that makes me want a free roaming Red Dwarf video game…

Now if that were a screengrab of a Dwarf game, yes, I admit, I’d have a raging hard-on.

I don’t like it, myself. The perspective seems a bit off, in the way the view of outside the grille doesn’t seem to match the dimensions of the corridor. Kind of in the same way the added-in (totally not CGI) skutters went across the bottom of the screen rather than the floor.

A “Doom” style computer game- Choose your character and grab your bazookoid, like that bit in the DVDs to get to the VR suite. Call it “Smeg”, face up to simulants, gelfs, vindaloo beasts, self loathing monsters, polymorphs and blow those mothers away.

Could do a “Gauntlet” version. “Some stupid smeghead shot the food!”, “Lister needs curry badly!”, “Rimmer is about to die (cheering)”.

Smelly Mass of Ejaculate Grit

Why does everyone assume that ‘smeg’ has to be used constantly? Smegorama!
