Covered in Smeg

Covers and menus for Just The Smegs revealed!

And, yeah, it’s pretty good! I think the metallic border is a bit too fussy (especially since the back of the cover and the spine is black, which makes the transition a bit jarring) - I get the whole ‘Garbage Pod’ motif, but perhaps it could’ve been done a bit more subtly. It does kind of echo the original Smeg Outs VHS release, though. The menus are nice, clean and simple - as you’d expect from a ‘Just The…’ release, but I feel I must protest at both menus exclusively featuring series VII screen grabs! Tsk. Still, it’s a strong design and I do like the film strip on the cover, even though - as we all know - only series VII was shot on film(!).

While I’m here I’ll post these ‘packshots’ we got from 2|entertain today as they’re EVER SO SLIGHTLY different to the versions we got on TOS (yes, look, the shadows are different on the Just The Smegs one, and The Bodysnacther Collection cover actually hasn’t been seen as a proper box yet… ok? Look, it’s showing off its slipcase and everything, the filthy whore) and I get excited about these sorts of things.

Just The Smegs packshot    Bodysnatcher Collection packshot

It has to be said, I think the Bodysnatcher cover looks a lot better in that picture than it has in the past. Maybe I’m just being dazzled by the hugely glossy surface they’ve expertly balanced it on?

A new low?

It could just as easily be a new high. It’s hard to tell around here!

Looking good. However do I really need all these various smegs a third time? Probably not, but I imagine they will end up in my possession sooner rather than later anyway.

Oh! Horrible thought! I hope the discs aren’t presented over each other, like the pink ones roughtly n the middle here, for example - http://www.copytec.net/packaging/packaging_selection.jpg

That is tremendously fucking irritating.

Seek and you may find…

Andrew, how are the 4 discs of the Bodysnatcher Collection presented within the case?

> both menus exclusively featuring series VII screen grabs!

Featuring what?! For a start they’re both stills, not grabs; and secondly shot on the bonus menu is taken from the Smeg Ups: Broadcast Edition shoot, not Series VII. Which seemed appropriate.

Ha! Put some mustard on those words, and eat them with this slice of humble pie, baked in an oven called shame, with the temperature set to egg-on-face.

I like how the Smeg Ups blurb on the back corrects the ‘Series 3000’ error from the VHS cover.

Is Phil secretly Matthew Holness?

Pfft, you know what I mean. And I didn’t mean screen grabs.

That picture of the Bodysnatcher cover makes it look better than before. Still not that keen, though. To be honest, I’m not that keen on the Just The Smegs cover either - I think it looks a bit cheap. I much prefer the original VHS ones, although I realise they wouldn’t have been suitable to use again. (I’m amused by Andrew making fun of “A smegfest for all Dwarfies”… on Dwarf’s OFFICIAL site!)

Seeing those menu shots makes me realise how happy I am that this is being released, though.

This dvd is much better value for money than the Doctor Who Series 3 boxset.

Has anyone realised that that cover is moreor less exactly the same as the UMD release for the PSP?

I had. I had the opportunity to buy a copy for £5 at the HMV at Heathrow airport the day I flew to the States, but as my PSP is American I wouldn’t be able to watch it, so I passed. If I want to watch the smeg-ups on the move, I’ll rip ‘em from the DVD thankyouverymuch.

And as much of a Dwhoref I am (do you see what I did there?), it’s unlikely I’ll be snagging Just The Smegs. There isn’t really anything there that makes it worth my while. I imagine I’ll end up getting a copy eventually, once the price has gone down a bit.
