These days, grannies are as likely to be found playing Wii tennis in the living room as their spotty grandsons are likely to be playing Dungeons & Dragons up in their darkened bedrooms.

Two things, here. Firstly, I like how the suggestion is that popular gaming is a recent phenomenon. I guess they missed that whole PlayStation thing. Fifteen years ago.

Secondly… why pick on D&D? Alright, there have been D&D computer games, but it’s not really famous for that. There are far more well-known nerdy game things that could have been picked on. Also, way to make a derogatory comment about D&D just a few weeks after Gary Gygax pops it, eh?

I used to have one of those ZX Spectrums. (XZ…. sheesh…) Poor comparison really since the two machines were produced years.. nay… decades apart. And the Spectrum did pretty well in it’s time (although the game graphics were pretty dire, even for those days.)

Xbox is technologically far superior. Is it really? Who would have thought!

Red Dwarf definitely seems to be the current “lol nerds” reference. But the fact is that Red Dwarf was *massively* popular amongst teenagers at one time - far too popular for it to be a stereotypical nerdy thing. At my school, although some people (ie me) were more into it than others, it really was a common factor amongst the majority of people I knew. Much like gaming was.

I remember a few of the ‘geekier’ people at school (i.e. those who could create their own 1,000 line BASIC program at the age of 10) banging on about Red Dwarf and me not giving it a second thought, although I knew the rapping guy from Maid Marian was in it. Then all of a sudden everyone was watching it. Good god, the heady days of the early-mid ’90s. TNG, X-Files, Dwarf, Darkwing Duck…I could bring myself to climax right now.

Btw I’ll give you ten points if you can tell me Darkwing Duck’s real name.

Sorry. I haven’t seen it since I was a kid, but that show was definitely, without any question, the first time I was genuinely in love with a television program.

Oddly I haven’t thought to pick up the DVDs, though. I think I’d kind of prefer the memory to the possession.

I don’t remember Darkwing Duck at all. (Except mentions on here.) I do remember Batfink as a kid though.. the kind of Bat, er bat with the wings of iron….

I think that sums me up rather well.

But what does it make us now? I still play the Saturn, Nintendo, Mega Drive and all the rest. A super geek? Or just someone really wanting those classic games again?

I realised that I am stuck to playing what I love the most when I bought an Xbox brand new, and bought Sonic Mega Collection and be the only game i bothered with :D Munch’s Oddysee is a good game on the xbox, but it lacked the fun I got playing the older version on the Playstation. 3D isn’t always the way forward…

I heartily recommend New Super Mario Bros on the DS Lite. Proper 2D platforming action, which plays brilliantly and looks fucking gorgeous. (Fucking hard, mind you…)

I find my MegaDrive and Sega Saturn get far more play than any of my newer consoles, the only current gen’ system I’ve actually enjoyed is the Wii.

So many of the maps are horrendously frustrating. Munch gives me the shits, too- that fucking ‘doing’ noise when he moves.
