Red Dwarf - All The Shows?

What the cock is this, then?

No real details so far about this, beyond a projected release date - 10th November - and what we can glean from the title: Red Dwarf: 20th Anniversary - All The Shows. The timing and title would seem to suggest that this is nothing to do with the upcoming special - there’s surely not enough time for anything to be completed, and besides, “All The Shows” would seem to indicate something rather different. But then, we’ve had the extras-packed releases, and Just The Shows - it’s difficult to see what… well, use any such release could be, unless we’re missing something.

As ever, we’ll have to wait to see what light TOS can shed on the matter. But this doesn’t feel like something worth getting too excited over…

Prolly just a Repackage of the earlier one just to coincide with the 20th. It follows the standard release Protocol.

The 20th Anniversary thing does make it slightly more enigmatic, but my first thought was originals and re-masters together, maybe?

It’s blatantly both volumes of Just The Shows together with 20th anniversary slapped on for good measure. I wonder whether we’ll ever see a RED DWARF - EVERY LAST SMEGGING BIT set containing series’ 1-VIII DVDs (the normal 2-disc releases), Just The Smegs, Bodysnatcher, Beat The Geek(?) etc.

This is precisely what I wonder from the title, too. Which would render the release COMPLETELY pointless, because… well, Just The Shows is already OUT there.

“EVERY LAST SMEGGING BIT” wouldn’t interest me either, of course, but at least I could see the point in such a release for others.

In a few years i’m sure we will get Just The Shows, including the Audio Books and the 20th Anniversary special/clip shows? it will be a shame if this is the Red Hot News this Friday. out of interest, will any one here be buying this? don’t get me wrong it’s a great price the series I-VIII but most of us already have them in their 2 dic and vanilla versions, not including VHS tapes!

It would be funny if they didn’t confirm ANY details until the audience recordings (if there are any…if it was a clips show there probably wouldn’t be) or broadcast. Just think if Bobby hadn’t even hinted about anything new and then suddenly it was sprung upon us.

VII and VIII were spread out over three discs rather than two, so as not to affect the bitrate negatively. The JTS versions look pretty much identical - a few animated menus, Easter eggs and commentary tracks don’t take up too much space.

Seamless branching is way more complex than pressing a single button. Which also makes it more expensive.

Andrew's picture

Andrew / Thu, 2008-09-11 09:45 / #

> Seriously, I am surprised that 2entertain won’t or can’t implement such a long-established feature of the DVD format.

Seriously, I’m explaining that it’s a cost issue. Long-established it may be, but it’s not a feature you see on a lot of TV shows’ discs because there ain’t the budget for it.

> That’s over 4 hours of material stuffed onto a single DVD9.

No, it’s really not.

Tikka to Ride’s remastered versions aren’t on the discs in full, but rather implemented via the ‘angle’ option. So while there IS extra footage on there, it’s only a minute or two - just the new CGI shots. It’s like seamless branching, only much less costly - all we had to do was ensure the new shots matched the old runtime exactly, and synched with the existing audio. (You’ll find the same trick being used on a lot of classic Dr Who DVDs.)

All of which means there’s THREE hours(ish) of material on there. Not four.

But running time isn’t the only factor when it comes to file size - IDW isn’t a full episode, but rather a (predominantly black and white) set of storyboards. As with all the bonus material, we take decisions of the encoding, choosing which items get the most attention and which can afford a lower individual encode. And IDW was clearly going to come out at a smaller size anyway, because the video was far less complex - no humans, smaller colour palette, etc.

I’m not lying to you - the difference between the JTS versions and the original releases is negligible.

Christ, where did all this fucking sand come from?!

Probably should have done that BEFORE you started going on about Tikka being on the disc four times then, huh?

Look, you asked if there was a difference between the JTS and original versions. I’m saying no, not that you’d notice. You asked why 2e didn’t use branching, I explained. Clearly I should have left you to your genius and not replied. Lesson learnt.

Now if you don’t mind, someone has to sweep up all this sand.

Andrew I really can’t believe that during all that work on the VII DVD, GNP didnt pay more attension to the MB sizes of the files they were putting on the DVD.

Why didnt you have much bigger meetings about these numbers. 3154MB is such
a large number you should have discussed it for a day at least, if not a week.

I mean all you guys did was, bring the series out on something better than the previous VHS, all together, in smaller nicely coloured themed packaging, with original Xtended Editions Of Tikka To Ride And Ouroboros And Duct Soup, and added Tikka To Ride Remastered Edition, record full Cast Commentary, make an exlcusively shot entertaining documentary, produce Identity Within with brand new artwork and voice over, run a Fan Films competition won by geniuses, add a featurette, Trailers And Kryten Introductions, Isolated Music Cues, Photo Gallery, Smeg Ups, Weblinks, Easter Eggs, Raw FX Footage, Dave Hollins Radio Sketches, Deleted Scenes and, fresh animated menus, and write a detailed souvenier booklet for collectors.

Instead of focusing on the main issue, of bitrate and file size, didnt you guys realise, we wouldnt be watching these dvd’s to be entertained, by comedy, drama, or insights. We only want them for analysis to be placed into our 20th century dvd numbers collection.

Man, it actually crossed my mind a few days ago that it might be him…

Dude, seriously, this is not a normal way to deal with to people. The over-reactions are genuinely unhealthy when they’re this frequent. You need to find someone to talk to. The world is not answerable to you, nor dumber than you. It also doesn’t hate you on sight. But if you attack unreasonably, it will put up a defence. This does not make everyone else wrong, or unreasonable.

Get some counselling. People have bad days, but you seem to be working towards having a bad life. You’re obviously angrier than you want to be. Call the Samaritans, talk to local services, see your GP. Do something. Get help. You won’t find it here, not when you behave like this.

>But if you attack unreasonably, it will put up a defence.

Very true, but what surprises me here is that NEITHER TIME was the defense disproportionate to the offense. I’ve seen plenty of examples when people get beat up on forums for no good reason, or for a good reason but they get beat on too harshly to be considered even remotely fair (well…you’ve all seen that, too, I’m sure) but in this case—both times this has happened—it really was just a matter of the offender’s accusations being handed back to him rationally.

I’m gobsmacked. The people you’d think would fuck off due to unfair treatment never do. It’s always the ones who perceive unfair treatment where there is none.

On a more helpful note: if you’re going to go bananas and delete all of the posts that make you sound like a shit, why don’t you just think twice before you post in the first place? That way when you decide to leave you won’t have to make sure to take absolutely every sentence you’ve ever typed with you.

>What was said in the deleted posts?

If this is a serious question, KIMOTA was asking Andrew if the episodes on Just the Shows were encoded at a superior bitrate to the episodes on the separate series DVDs. He assumed that, without extras, there’d be more room on Just the Shows to facilitate this.

A valid question, I think.

But he became demanding and seemed to accuse Andrew of hiding things, going to far as to cite figures he managed to figure out from looking at file sizes and crap like that, even though he already had his answer. Honestly it was a bit out of line, but nothing on either end of the discussion led me to believe it would end so horribly.

The “Matt” stuff refers to when this happened a few months back…similar thing. Argument, deleted posts, and a thread that doesn’t read well as a result.

What Matt did was get on Andrew’s case about the state of TOS. (The previous version…not the current one.) He had complaints about the site—which, again, were for the most part valid and have since been rectified—but he chose to take issue with them in a public forum, which isn’t really the right way to go about that sort of thing. If he REALLY felt he could help he should have just sent an email to the appropriate person, and not take issue with them and put them on the spot in front of everybody. That’s counter-productive, and he was called on it.

He then deleted everything he had written. Actually, he TRIED to but one of the admins locked his account so that he couldn’t delete the rest of it. He tried to get John in trouble with his hosting company saying that G+T were retaining his content without his permission (or some such nonsense) but they politely told him he was being an idiot.

As we know, this stuff always happens in threes, so it’s just a question of who gets pissed off and deletes his comments/account next.

I’m hoping it’s Pete Martin.

Since the confirmed news of new dwarf on dave, means 2 more shows.

“All the shows” is sort of now an out of date title before it’s even been released.

Although I do realise that I’m being highly pedantic and that “All the shows except the ones coming next year on Dave.” is a rubbish title for a dvd box set.
And so I will be going around the country applying “almost” stickers instead.

Pete Part Three's picture

Pete Part Three / Mon, 2008-09-22 11:21 / #

This release does seem a little strange though. Capitalizing on the 20th Anniversary is fine, but the “important” anniversary has been hastily changed to the 21st in light of the Dave developments. Wouldn’t be surprised if this gets bumped to next year.

Writing as someone whom had Just The Shows bought for him at Christmas last year these releases are great. There will be an audience for them. Not everyone is a hardened, jaded, Dwarf fan who has all the memorabilia. Some of us just had our original VHS recordings of the BBC2 shows!

I’ve read on here some of the reviews of Just The Shows where it was debated as to who would buy it, with the current publicity the answer is:

Lots of people.

For at least 9 months the Red Dwarf audience won’t be continually shrinking, after that though, unless the show is picked up for a regular run by a TV station, it will be back to square one.

ChrisM's picture

ChrisM / Tue, 2008-09-23 15:57 / #

Possibly, from hardened fans who visit these sites. There are plenty out there who would never know about the release though. Being broadcast on the box first is still the best way to advertise the show (and therefore the DVDs to be released later.)

Still, if a whole new series isn’t commissioned after these specials, straight to DVD could be an option.

Not that I’m naysaying you understand… lets wait and see.

I’m still excited about this.

Somebody / Tue, 2008-09-23 16:59 / #

I’d expect this to be the eight series (as released individually, not the “Just the Shows” versions) in a box. Possibly, if they delay it, including the Dave Specials too.

>And surely it wasn’t purely hardened fans who put the DVDs of series 1 - 8 so high in the charts?

No, but the show had been broadcast at that point.

I really don’t think bringing out the specials on DVD before the broadcast would make any difference really. It’ll likely arrive 2009 anyway… about the same time it’d take for the DVDs to be produced anyway.
