I’ve just realised that I found “Motor Racer” before this list was published, and the listed one on the website is one track away. Is there any chance that the one on the website is a mistake? *waits for chiding*

That’s actually the music we used in the spoof movie trailer on the Series VII DVD Easter Egg. (The VIII trailer track is also in Cassandra - ‘Future Conflict’ by Martin Smith/Dominic Glynn. (Chappell, Disc 231, Track 5.))

As was I - it’s SO much like a reworked version of the show’s opening theme. I’ve developed a lot of respect for both editors and library tracks while doing this little job.

The whole list has been very tough to get together for a half-dozen reasons/excuses. There are bound to be more omissions and errors. I’ll try to keep an eye on this thread in case people find any more…

So are you back with GNP, Andrew? For some reason I thought you were no longer involved with their updates, though this could be down to a misunderstanding whenever you made your announcement.

I’ve stayed on freelance to keep the website updated for now, but - aside from working on the new boxset interior when they needed a hand - I’m no longer on staff/in the office.

I think I wee’d a little bit when I finally got to hear the “new crew” music in full. :) Been waiting years to hear that track in total!

Well, what I think has happened here, the chord structure and the melody is the same, but they’re removed the middle 8 from the library music. and kept only the choir at the beginning and the drum loop (which I have happily been able to steal, it’s so nice!) and completely re-recorded the instrumentation, which might have been enough to class the song as a new entity, as it will have a new Sound Recording Copyright on it, so the guy who “composed” the new Time Team theme, Paul Greedus. may get royalties from the theme.

When I first heard it, (i’d typed in ‘guitar solo’ to try and find the Back To Reality music!) I thought, ‘ah those drums sounds like the time team theme’. Then the synths started up and then I got really excited as anyone who collects themes from TV shows would do when they hear a clean full length (insert dirty knob gag here) version…

But how do we know that S Holland didn’t use the Time Team theme and make it into library music? We may never know…

Library tracks are an odd beast in any case. Sometimes existing tracks are taken and made famous through their use on one popular programme. Sometimes tracks are written especially for a programme, and then sold onto a library music company to make a bit of cash. So it goes both ways.

And then sometimes you get something like this:

Which sounds like a warped version of the This Morning theme, but was never actually used on the programme - but it was used as STV’s closedown music for a time!

From the forum I got that file from, somebody suggested that what might have happened is This Morning’s producers heard that original library track, and thought it showed promise, but needed a bit of extra work doing to it - and so they took it and adapted it. But whatever happened, it just goes to show how weird the interchange of music can get with these things.

For some reason, as a child, that logo you’ve got as your avatar, used to scare the shit out of me. I think it was because I live so close to the Kirkstall Road Studios and when I wasn’t expecting to see it as we were passing it one day, the logo was massive on the side of the building, and kinda freaked me out. I still get a weird feeling now actually…

They’ve changed it to “itv Yorkshire” now. Thank god.

I’ve noticed there are some famous faces in these tracks, Christian Henson, who did the new Top Gear theme as well as Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps; Rupert Gregson-Williams, brother of Harry, who used to team up with Hans Zimmer; Keith Mansfield, who composed Grandstand; and Alan Hawkshaw, who composed “Chicken Man”, also known as the Grange Hill theme, hehe. :)

Some of the VIII music is by Dominic Glynn - who, as a Webboarder pointed out - is the same person who put together the series 23 Colin Baker ‘Doctor Who’ theme and composed scores for several Baker stories.

I think the New Crew theme will have to be my ringtone. I love that scene so much.

Ah, I’d hoped it would scare someone! It’s surprisingly common, actually - a lot of people seem to have been terrified by it.

There’s this version on YouTube, which I think is mildly scary. But there’s one terrifying version where the logo suddenly just appears with a fanfare - but I can’t find it at the moment. You may be pleased to hear!

I don’t understand why people think of the YTV ident as scary - and apparently the studio at Sheffield still has its version up, since they know that no-one cares.

The links to the various publishers are on rd.co.uk. Each site is searchable, with the tracks available to listen to - find the CD/track you’re looking for on the list and enter it into the site’s facility.

I don’t think it’s scary at all in the yellow version. But I find the the black and white one unnerving, for some reason…

That wasn’t creepy at all. :S Of course lying in a ditch with your head, hands and feet covered, will surely save you from a nuclear attack.

Lying down as flat as possible covering head, hand and feet reduces the chance of burning them when the blast occures.
Always try to minimize injuries.
So you still can use of your head, hands and feet for survival and for the decontamination procedures after the explosion.
Don’t forget to check the wind direction so you can avoid the fallout when seeking safety and shelter.

If you are far enough you will survive, although probably injured the blast.
If you are to close you’d soon be dead or you are already.

The level of radiation and damage is iaw the distance that you are from the detonation site.

This seems likely for both This Morning and Time Team. Especially as the final orchestrations are so much nicer. (Although the first few series of Time Team had a different version of the track - possibly edited from the library version?) I think there’s plenty of others too - sometimes where a placeholder track has been shoved in and they’ve decided it’s actually great.

Library music is great. I love it and all it’s awful synth charm.

I’ve been slowly trying to find the Library music tracks for years, and actually found quite a few of them. But this list has been great. Especially tracking down the tracks that are on more obscure libraries like MusicHouse.

Being a BBC editor myself (well in the news side of things, so nothing too glam) i’ve been lucky to have accounts with most of these libraries, so if no admin has any objection, i’m happy to post CD quality versions of any particular track. It goes without saying though that these are copywritten tracks and shouldn’t be used in anything though without paying the proper royalties :) I swear to god though i’m going to use the ‘Back to Reality’ new crew track as soon as i can haha. Though it has dated so may sound a bit weird!

It goes to show the amazing work of editors on the show listening to some of these tracks. Tracks like ‘Turmoil’ for example, and of course the new crew theme from ‘Back to Reality’ almost sound like they were composed specifically for Red Dwarf. There’s elements of the Red Dwarf theme in them. Very clever stuff.
