Remember when we used to get Red Dwarf news only once a week, and even then it was only semi-exciting most of the time? Well, today’s daily update on spacecorpsdirective98247.co.uk is a bloody great trailer. Click the link, enter your code, and go to the third item on the Ship’s Log.
The scene is one we’ve already seen glimpses of - the crew being shot by some sort of utter bastard. Presumably this bugger is the one “responsible for their creation” with whom they “plead for more life”, as per the synopsis for Part Three. It certainly seems Blade Runner-esque, which is also cited there.
So, the Dwarfers run through some futuristic streets, being shot at by this bloke, and Lister falls as if shot in the back. The whole thing is fabulously atmospheric - a real indication of the direction the new shows are going. Of course, it’s not a direction that will please everyone, but I for one am hugely looking forward to a darker, more gritty Dwarf. It’s like what Series VII tried and failed to do - fingers crossed Back To Earth will pull it off.
My favourite thing, of course, is the collection of bullets with the characters names on. Maybe if they owned the bullets with their name on it, they’d never get hit by it, cause they’ll never shoot themselves…

We saw it on Monday as well - I guess the Blade Runner inspiration is too obvious to be worth mentioning right? :)
It still seems a lot unlike what we’ve had before from Dwarf.
Maybe that’s just because there are lots of people.
The similarity is very obvious yes, but i can’t help but wonder if we are missing the significance of that fact.
No one we know huh? Damn, there goes my theory about that scene… Can someone cap it anyway? Although it was already a safe bet that whoever was loading the gun wasn’t running. I’m frankly very surprised that we now know almost for sure that everybody dies except they don’t (again) and we haven’t speculated much on why that is.

Fair enough. I don’t think visually its that different from what we saw in VII (though done better in this particular bit,) especially in the opening shot with the bullets. Maybe it’s just me and i’m sure that won’t please everyone, but as long as the laughs support the look then i say more power to it (not to mention that it is likely to sell better to other countries with higher production values).
I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this means Dwarf is both Super and Stylish at the same time. I will cop to being one of those people who can’t get away from the silly fallacy that the cheap sets somehow caused it to be better, but then again, I’ve not been disproven either. Except for Cassandra, obviously.

I’m just loving the clips we’ve seen so far. While I do adore the look and feel of the early series, I also enjoy the more filmic quality of the later series. I’m finding the idea of a darker, more dramatic Dwarf quite appealing.
Oh, and I took a couple of caps from the trailer for anyone who might be interested. Four show the gunman, while the other shows that there are indeed people in gas masks.

Hey, maybe the scene in this clip takes place in the future… in Red Dwarf time, but before the accident.
I haven’t analysed the series as much as some here but the filmic look is fine with me. While it contrasts the almost deliberately cheap-looking thing from the earlier series it’s not necessarily bad. And nor is it total - surely Carbug tickles the same place that the cheap props of earlier RD did.
As long as the story, dialogue and jokes are great then this filmic look surely won’t hinder the show. It was the former, rather than the latter, that made VII and VIII a chore.

I enjoyed the music, although I’m suspecting it’s probably stock music and not composed specifically for the new episodes. It still makes it all seem very “epic” though.

If anyone whilst we’re watching this starts boasting about ‘calling it first’ BEFORE the bloody show is over then they’re going to see a side of me they won’t much like.
Apart from the ‘yes, this is excellent’ which by now appears to be so obvious if it was something else it wouldn’t deserve a mention, does the shooter have something on his cheek? Like a scar or patch or something. Maybe he’s an advanced simulant. Ha!

The first proper trailer for the return of Red Dwarf - a comedy show - and there’s not a single joke in the whole thing*. Does this not concern anyone? It’s starting to look like, once again, Doug has pushed the comedy aside to focus on the sci-fi, which was the downfall of the show after series 6. It’s a comedy show. The comedy should come first.
*unless you count parodying a scene from Blade Runner as a ‘joke’.

Wait a minute…are you cunts IN the show?
If so, my anticipation level has just skyrocketed.
Or perhaps it’s a trailer showing how impressive the new Red Dwarf actually looks… in which case it’s bloody brilliant!
I look at the trailer [which by the way, I’m hoping someone gets the flv file link!] and thought “wow”… which I’m taking as a positive.
It does look great. The production values are de-smegging-licious! But I’m still worried the comedy element is once again being watered down. Believe me, as a long standing Red Dwarf fan I want this to be amazing, and higher production values are fine in my book - I don’t hold the cheap set of the early series as sacred. But I want comedy from Red Dwarf, not epic sci fi action drama.
I don’t know… The way that the cast have been in interviews and whatnot would suggest that this could be quite funny - I’ve heard several cast comments which would suggest that the script is solid on comedy. And anyway, if you’re shooting it in a cinematic format, surely that would suggest a more ‘Epic’ feel overall anyway?
But don’t forget this isn’t a ‘trailer’ it’s a teaser… it isn’t something being shown on television… THAT is where the comedy will be.
Besides, things have to somewhat move on. If it came back exactly the same it would be a dated format. Look at Batman as a strange example… it went from the cheesy comic book eske format of the ninties, and has turned into a dark and somewhat serious product…
It’s been brought up to date. And if Doug is wanting this return to be more than just a one-off weekend nostalgia trip, perhaps he’s thought the same…
To be honest, I’ve always watched Red Dwarf as a comedy fan and not as a particularly big sci-fi fan, yet if the story is good I can forgive slips in the humour department.
So, even if Back to Earth turns out to be about as funny as deep cleaning the waste disposal unit in a bowel transplant clinic, I will still be chuffed to bits and singing its praises if we at least get a tremendous, clever story out of it.
One trait I noticed about the original Grant/Naylor episodes was that usually, even if an episode was weak on the laughter front (admittedly rare occurence), the story was still interesting and enjoyable enough to thoroughly forgive its comedy shortcomings.
Batman is a bad example in this case, as the original comics were not supposed to be funny. And the comics were at their darkest in the 80’s - before the first Batman movie was made. But I hear what you’re saying mate. All I ask is laughs aplenty from these new shows and I’ll be a happy smegger.
haha! Just picture the scene - Rimmer explains in great detail just how dangerous the situation is and how badly their lives are in jeopardy, only for Lister to turn to him and say, in broad Liverpudlian, ‘Why so smeggin’ serious?’

Anyway, thats somewhat off topic, unless it turns out The Joker is the one behind sparing their lives! Haha!
EDIT: Although to bring something ON-topic into my comment, I’ve thought of a possible yet highly unlikely plot now. What if the earth they’ve landed on is in the usual parallel universe, but everyone is infact not human. Everyone is android like and they had wiped out the humans in their own history.
Out pops Lister from Carbug or whatever, and the story isn’t the crew being spared, it’s the last human being spared?

It could work, I agree. But I’m not sure about the parallel universe thing personally. I’m imagining some kind of game - not an AR game though. But, the parallel universe idea could come back in. Maybe.

The Burton Batman films lacked the grittiness of the new films, and they certainly had more humour but they were not lacking in darkness and they worked in their own way. Particularly the first two. They had an almost fairy tale type quality but Adam West batman they definitely weren’t. I find it curious how people seemed to forget that when the (granted great) new films came along, as if it were a new thing. I guess the last film in that continuity (Batman and Robin) is fresh in everyone’s mind.
As for Red Dwarf, I tend to enjoy it as much for the science fiction adventure and the story as the humour. In fact if Red Dwarf had been envisioned as a serious sci-fi drama, with a bit of alteration here and there (mainly in toning down some of the ‘sci-fi to extreme ideas’ which worked well in comedy) it could have worked in that format. I’m glad of what he got though, and I’m not suggesting I’d have wanted it to be that in hindsight. I don’t mind the balance leaning a bit more the other way though, as long as we’ve got some of the humour.
Considering Starbug and Corrie, I don’t have much worry that there’ll be humour (although how funny it is remains to be seen.) In that action scene there merely focusing on another area.
And that scene makes me wonder if this will actually be the Red Dwarf future and the other stuff was an illusion after all.
Atm I’m getting the vibe that a few people on here are still seething over the style of the new episodes (‘filmic’, no audience etc.), even if they’re trying their best to hold back on posting that particular opinion just so as not to put a downer on proceedings.

The comedy wasn’t pushed aside in 7 & 8 (it just wasn’t as good, for various reasons) and I’d say there was about as much focus on the sci-fi as in past series’.

Uh, I don’t really think you can say that VIII pushed aside comedy in favour of sci-fi. It tried to do EXACTLY the opposite. It failed because the comedy wasn’t funny.
Look, we’ve seen, what, three actual clips of footage (not counting the stuff seen from “outside” the cameras, if you get what I mean - e.g. when we saw them filming in the bunkroom). We’ve had a well-shot sci-fi drama bit (the gunman/glass smash sequence), a brief glimpse of a fairly amusing concept (the boys squeezed into Carbug and Cat’s toy steering wheel), and a joke that made me laugh (the bit in John Lewis). If the show continues to mix those three elements, to that level of quality, I’ll be BLOODY happy.
It’s a mix of Sci-Fi and Comedy isn’t it. That’s what the show’s “best monents and best episodes” are all about. Doug knows what he’s doing.

If any season did this, I’d argue it was Series V. Which has been the top-voted series over and over again…
I don’t think they should show us the comic side of new RD before Easter.
Most jokes are less funny when heard for the 2nd time.

Re the comedy vs sci-fi debate: I’m a big sci-fi fan, but I’ve always seen the show as primarily a comedy. The sci-fi has been, on the whole, although not exclusively, a plot device to explore the comic potential of the characters rather than the defining attribute of the show.
You could make the show work as a character-based comedy with little sci-fi (as they did in the early days), but could you make it work as a sci-fi show without the comedy/characters? Probably not.
Not sure what exactly I’m trying to say there, but I’m sure you get my drift. ;D
