“Are you just going to sit there then as ever, gushing like sodomy and cocksucking Grant Naylor Productions to climax?” - Darrell Jones

John Hoare / 30.03.09 / 6:52 pm

More Red Dwarf?

Twenty minutes more, to be precise - minus whatever part of that is being used for ads and the like. Thanks to our ever-helpful forum-goers for pointing out that whilst Part 1 of Back To Earth has a 30 minute slot, Part 2 and Part 3 have 40 bloody minutes!

First it expands from two to three parts, then the running time increases - this is getting more and more epic, isn’t it?

This pleases me greatly.

I like to think of it as not so much three specials, but HALF A BLOODY SERIES!

On the other hand… Radio times could be wrong.

I’m not trying to be negative mind, but we’ve had a member of the production team from GNP stating each episode is 23 minutes (i.e. 30 minute time slot.)

Anyhow, not long to find out now.

Any synopses in the RT?

at this rate when these are all joined together to mkae one story (assuming they are shown as one Xtended story on the DVD release) this will be movie length and will have the movie look. unlike the Back in the Red Xtended, which had the length but not the look.

I’m guessing the reason so many top-notch crew were involved in BtE at such a budget price was on the condition that should this lead to the Movie, it will guarantee their involvement. I suppose this is the movie dry-run Mk. II.

The dream lives on…

Pfft, and I thought this was about Chris Barrie possibly wanting to do more Red Dwarf, or something.

He said 3 x 24 minutes, didn’t he? He was probably laughing his arse off knowing that that wasn’t strictly true. Whatever, I hope parts 2 & 3 ARE longer. In a 40 minute slot that would make them more like the usual BBC episode length. This really would be feature-length if true (OK OK there’s no definitive minimum that is used for ‘feature-lenth’ but I always see it as anything over 80 minutes)

… or they could include more of those lovely adverts.

They could have Iain Lee pulling a stupid face for 10 minutes.

Not really. There’s an absolute maximum of 12 minutes per hour (granted, that doesn’t include trailers, but there IS a limit to how much you can pad stuff out).

On Dave, a 40-minute slot means a BBC half-hour show (so about 28m30-29m of actual programme.)

Or it could be padded with extra making of clips and bumpers about red dwarf being back? Great if it is longer though. I would expect they have sold as much advertising space at premium around this Premiering of new dwarf as an event.

It depends - the BFI and AMPAS have it as 40 mins, the SAG as 80 mins. I certainly have “feature films” on DVD that are only just over an hour long.

But with a TV show, I think it’s anything significantly longer than the usual running time for that show.

I would expect they have sold as much advertising space at premium around this Premiering of new dwarf as an event.

I should imagine we’re going to get bombarded like mad. And no doubt it’ll have those annoying Cobra sponsorship trails too.

Wouldn’t be nice if it was sponsored by Leopard Lager instead?

I’d love that to be true, but I can’t see it myself. I think the movie is dead. Hopefully though BTE will do will and we’ll get more TV-based Dwarf in future.

Damn shame that Rob Grant wouldn’t come back for the specials.

The making of special has been given a 35 minute slot according to Radio Times, http://www.radiotimes.com/ListingsServlet?event=10&channelId=2050&progra...
