“I can't think of a single time when either the F or C word was funny.” - Hercule Platini, ATVRD

Ian Symes / 26.03.09 / 6:31 pm

Teh Grauniad

Lookie here - the Guardian has their own exclusive clip from Back To Earth. It consists mostly of the X Factor gag from John Lewis/Price Smashers, but there’s a brand new shot of Carbug tearing down Coronation Street at the beginning. Lovely stuff.

As for the write-up, they repeat the info from SFX that Kochanski is dead and Holly is down because Lister left a tap on. We have to nitpick, however, about the implication that the shows are only set on Earth because the original sets no longer exist. Apart from anything else, they’ve built a bunch of new sets, including a brand new bunkroom. This seems to be the new “there was a huge budget increase for Series III” or “they only stopped doing model shots because they blew up Red Dwarf”.

Still. Exclusive content popping up on the website of a mainstream newspaper. What will happen next? Keep ‘em peeled, guys…

ADDITIONAL: As p2p points out in the comments, this is also today’s SCD98247 update. Yes, I called it SCD98247. You’ll all be doing it in the playground tomorrow. So, not so exclusive then. Silly Guardian.

SkyAndSun / Thu, 2009-03-26 19:21 / #

I guess if I’m nitpicking I would question if that clip is the best to lead with. It’s not the funniest joke ever. But - yeah. Negative mode off.

hummingbird's picture

hummingbird / Thu, 2009-03-26 19:21 / #

But there haven’t been many funny clips released yet, so as gags go that’s probably the best they can do.

So you dont think there is anything amusing about seeing car bug for the 1st time then, as a cool visual pun, or seeing it driving around for the 1st time. It’s not as if everybody has seen it as much as fans that are paying close attention.

I think choice of clips for trailers is hard. The short run time of these shows.
you dont want to put all the best bits into the trailer and people then think the shows arent as good as the trailer. And then you have to decide which bits work in clip form, which I think is a topic this site has spoken about before at length. How Dwarf doesnt break down easy.

I think it’s a clip that works out of the story, and it’s a clip that reminds us of the relationship between the crew, rimmer and kryten, and also between Dwarf as entertainment and how shit tv has got in 2009 in general. Is rimmers distain funnier that watching the beds in big brother while nothing is happening in the dark, filled with people you’ll never see again.

No im not saying it particularly made me laugh, but as most people are thinking
“hey look dwarf is back” when they see it, it’s perhaps a clip or one of the only clips that works in short like that. Real story spefic trailers are probably to come.

I loved seeing Carbug driving! Yes, I know…. cars drive.(Well, ok it’s the people who do the driving, but you know what I mean.) It’s their raison d’etre, to quote a certain talkative household appliance, but it gave me a little thrill just the same.

And for some reason I found Rimmer’s gag funnier this time around.

Maybe it was hearing the theme behind it.

> So you dont think there is anything amusing about seeing car bug for the 1st time then

I do. But I agree with Teatime that it’s probably not the best clip to lead with, in the sense that maybe it isn’t the best way to communicate what the show is about to a new audience, or an audience that hasn’t seen any RD for a decade or so.

While it’s true that people here have seen a lot of Carbug, they’ve also presumably watched a lot of RD during the intervening years since VIII, and can appreciate these clips in the context of the show better than a casual viewer would. If you know what I mean.

>Maybe it was hearing the theme behind it.

That could be part of it! It’s interesting how little things can affect your mood subconsciously.

Considering complaints about the lack of humour in the other clip (which I loved) this was nice to balance things out.

I wonder if the Starbug style stanchions above the wheels will actually be used at all? If not, the sheer ridiculous redundancy is amusing.

You keep thinking that. I’ll go back to thoroughly enjoying various shows, both British and American.

whiny and negative are a grauniad commentators speciality, though not suprising from a board with a guy who has a user name like ‘Terminal Decline’ :)

Whiny exibit A:

‘Oh come on, Dave!
Red Dwarf spuffed its load twenty years ago - you could have given this money to a bright young comedy talent: there’s loads of promising sketch acts out there on the fringe comedy circuit that can’t get on to the only other outlet (BBC Three) because they’re not surreal (Mighty Boosh) or ‘urban’ enough.
Sarcasm mode activated: I bet it will be really funny.’

Not so Whiny BUT STILL WHINY exibit B:

‘Series 7 almost worked (or certainly could have done)- mostly because of the play between all of the current resident blokes vs a woman moving in - but losing Rimmer killed it.

I really can’t wait to watch it and will probably love it, however terrible it will be. WHICH I EXPECT IT WILL BE.’

Ahh, bitchy and nice at the same time

Given what we know about the meta-fictional nature of the story, is everyone staring at them and in “smirk mode” because they recognise them from Red Dwarf on the telly, do we think?

>Am I alone in really disliking Carbug?

It seems to draw attention to the low budget and I’m hoping we see the “real” Starbug as well. I don’t mind the design, except for the legs jutting out alongside the wheels.

SkyAndSun / Thu, 2009-03-26 23:41 / #

It genuinely is the same for every Guardian Online article I’ve read. Comments mainly from people who know better and who know that everything’s shit. What a miserable readership the paper has - at least, the part of its readership inclined to comment on articles.

Though I maintain GNP might have chosen a better clip to promote the show.

I’m apprehensive. There, I said it.

EDIT: Just saw the trailer. Crew in Carbug. Bystanders gawking at Carbug. The “hilarious” escalator scene. Whee.

Philko87's picture

Maybe that’s the point?

The popular assumption is that this is the actual Starbug transformed. It could just as likely be a real car that’s been modded to look like Starbug within the reality of this episode.

Im still totally open to everything they’re gonna throw at us. Not seen anything thats put me off so far, nothing. I may feel different after the episodes are broadcast, but I think as I may have said before, that Its silly to judge these clips and images out of context. Watch the episodes first. THEN shoot them down or praise them!:D

I don’t think so looking at the trailers. The impression I got from the scene where they’re all squashed up inside the car is that they’re coming in to land. Of course we don’t see the bug flying but maybe they’re saving that for the episode (or maybe it’ll remain off-screen as they use the effects budget elsewhere.)

I can’t say I’m keen. As a visual gag, its just too silly for my liking. It reminds me of a scaled-up version of one of those 20p rides for kids outside of supermarkets.
