“I don't think a Red Dwarf website gives appropriate context to call people "fucking cunts" or to use the word "cunting" as an adjective.” Gavin Clayton, ATVRD

Jonathan Capps / 23.12.11 / 11:38 am

It's Been 7 Days...

…since Red Dwarf had a studio audience recording. Amazingly, I’ve not yet woken up and it’s happening again today.

I’ve been reliably informed that Ed Moore let slip on Twitter that this week they’re recording episode 3 and not 2, but for the life of me I am unable to find that Tweet, so it’s possible he’s deleted it. Or I’m blind. There’s also been some extensive Steadicam work in the pre-records, so it’ll be interesting to see that work on the monitors and see if there’ll be any more in front of the audience tonight.

As with last week, please feel free to use this comment thread to bitch and moan at us for not posting an entire set report two seconds after leaving the studios.

Y U NO POST SET REPORT 2 SECONDS AFTER LEAVING THE STUDIOS?

Would this scenario be considered spoilery. If they are recording episode 3 instead of 2, we can (for the next 7 days at least) speculate as to the reasons why. Different sets which aren’t ready or a special guest who is unavailable etc… Speculation is fun.

But next friday night, somebody in the audience may be able to give a definitive answer as to why. And most probably will somewhere on the internet.

Is it a spoiler if somebody says “Yes, Bob, Mark and John were correct. It was a special guest who was unavailable last week”? Even if they don’t state who it actually is?

Speculation is only fun until the actual episodes air and then we get to find the reasons why and how close our theories were. In my opinion anyway.

I dunno, wouldnt’ something that may seem innocuous in Ep3’s recording could potentially be a spoiler for episode 2, so if something HAS happened in Episode 3, then we may know what’s going to happen in episode 2 and second guess.

I dunno, it’s very difficult what you can and cannot say in this situation…

I guess it was too much to ask for completely isolated stories where the running order is irrelevant.

>I guess it was too much to ask for completely isolated stories where the running order is irrelevant.

It could be like ‘Gunmen of the Apocalypse’ and ‘Rimmerworld’ where they need to set something up in the previous episode and go back to it.

Who says it is about the stories not being isolated anyway, it could be anything. It could be that the episode filming tonight is similar in plot to episode 1 so would be better not placed right after episode 1.

Or it could be (since we’ve heard nothing about it) that they aren’t building the Star Bug set till January so will be filming primarily Red Dwarf bound episodes in December.

EDIT: Or Capps could have misread a tweet.

Plastic Percy / Fri, 2011-12-23 15:58 / #

I just assumed that they’d film in whatever order they chose - depending on set construction, guest star availability etc. - and reorder them when it came to broadcast time. Like how Series II was filmed Better than Life/Thanks for the Memory/Stasis Leak/Kryten/Parallel Universe/Queeg.

Well I enjoyed it. My inital reaction was that some of the woofers were better this week, however that might just have been due to the audience being a bit more lively this evening.

Did it seem like we got a full episode? I thought we only got 20 mintues or so

Well we didn’t see a full episode, they haven’t finished the part Doug said about yet.

Last night’s was standalone; both episodes have been so far. I’m guessing the change in recording order was due to something logistical.

Fastest Dwarf recording yet apparently. I believe it was a Craig heavy episode (or at least he had the most lines going by a comment by Bobby Llew’s twitter) so he is used to speedy recording from Coronation Street, I expect. Plus Craig is usually sharpest with his lines.

Fantastic experience attending a Red Dwarf recording: something as recently as 48 hours ago I never ever thought I would get to do. And it’s all thanks to the crew at G&T -I’m most grateful and appreciative. Many thanks all at G&T!

The experience was fantastic and as for the show itself there were 3 or 4 standout scenes that I’m sure everyone will love on broadcast. Last week the writing was described as akin to series V/VI with a dash of II. To me, last night’s seemed more like a mix of VI and VII with one very broad joke thread throughout that was pure VIII and may get some hate online (also seemed out of place in a sitcom - or any show - in 2011).

Overall I was happy with the episode. What’s the deal with Kryten’s new Fagin nose though??

A mix of Series VI and VII seems like exactly what I want with new Red Dwarf.

Uh-oh! But if the VI-ish jokes are good enough I’m sure I’ll forgive them.

Craig’s got a Radio 2 show at 3pm. If it’s not a pre-record, then maybe that’s why they finished a bit early.

He also had a DJ gig last night which was round about 3 hours from the studio! Same with the next recording I think.

Yes, that running gag got some laughs but I know what you mean about seeming out of place in the context of the rest of the episode, and in those terms perhaps last weeks hung together a little better. In overall story terms however, the main drive of the story was an interesting concept and i’m glad it was done. As an aside, the final VT is I think a large part of the reason I was pleased with last nights episode. As a show climax (well nearly anyway, barring the actual final scene) that had some really good laughs.

Carlito's picture

Carlito / Sat, 2011-12-24 18:01 / #

It contained two main concepts - both A-plot potential ideas - which didn’t really sit right together in my opinion. It seemed a little artificial to overlap them towards the end. Both could have been expanded a little more and could probably have had a whole episode devoted to the idea rather than having to share screen time. The Lister story was brilliant and produced some major laughs from me. The other plot line was a fantastic idea underdeveloped.

Ultimately though a sitcom lives and dies by its laughter count, and I was very happy on that front.

Interesting. Sorry to have missed it. I had tickets to last night but had to pass them over to a friend when I was summoned elsewhere. Admittedly, I may have sat there with a face like a smacked arse at this broad VII-esque joke thread you mention but I’m sure to enjoy moaning about it in 9 months time, so it all works out.

You are the one around here who thinks Dwarf started its downward trend at series VI, right … my lord?

Pete Part Three's picture

Pete Part Three / Fri, 2011-12-30 00:17 / #

Only in as much as Series V is Red Dwarf at its very best, so anything following it is slighter lesser Dwarf. I dislike Cat’s “deader than…” lines and fucking hate Space Corps Directives. It’s comedy by numbers. It’s not dialogue, it’s just a gag without disguise.

Emohawk was the first episode I ever remember thinking “Erm, is that it?”. The plot fizzles out half-way through (incredibly unusual for G+N stories) and the stuff in the Gelf camp is so much more interesting than the rehashes of Duane and Ace. Things like that serve as portents for what came later and make me wonder if Rob quit because he was simply out of ideas and wanted to call it a day.

I love Legion though, will defend Rimmerworld from its naysayers and still think back fondly to the first time I saw Out of Time. Gunmen, I find over-rated but very good. Psirens is occasionally clunky.

I think III is better than IV though, so had VII been on the same level as VI there would be no “downward trend” as you say. Incidentally, I didn’t much like Back to Earth but I still found it a damn sight better than Series VIII, so it’s no longer an ever descending spiral.

I’ve never seen Red Dwarf recorded and applied for tickets because I felt like I owed it to the 13 year old in me who had a fantastic year watching 35 1/2 fantastic episodes. He would have died to be there. But it was my best mate’s engagement party the same night so it came up second-best, I’m afraid.

Friday the 30th. You dont have a Dwarf Recording. You are the rubbish Friday, surrounded by much better Fridays. You’re not even really part of christmas or new year. You are a poor excuse for a day.

By this point during the Series VIII recordings, I knew a lot more about series VIII than I know now about Series X. I kind of like that.

Come to think of it, this time around I’ve been to a recording and I still know less. I really like that.
