Just watched and really enjoyed The one Jasper Carrott on BBC, a one off edition of a short series of old comedians back on TV kind of thing. (There’s been three of them.)

And saw the seperate credit of Additional Material Rob Grant Doug Naylor.

Anyone know if this means they wrote something together for this show, or both contributed? It was mostly stand up, with a sketch called The Private Detectives reuniting Bob and Dave (Robert Powell) and a sketch with his Daugther Lucy Davis.

They used to write for him so it probably means that they have re-used old material.

Yeah I wondered if they had pulled anything out from an old draw like, but at the same time I didnt really get a feeling that the show was reusing old material as such, in that it was kind of topical a lot of it, but for sure it’s possible.

It’s been at least 20 years since Jasper Carrott had any new material.

Maybe it was stuff that was written years ago but never used.

No it’s been 1 day. Though yeah he’s previously stood trial for this very crime definately.

Out of the two shows broadcast so far I definitely preferred the Jasper Carrott ‘One’ to the Lenny Henry ‘One’, but then I’m a Liverpool fan so you knew that already.

He definitely re-used some material, their was one gag in particular during one of the stand-up segments which I recognised from Canned Carrott. That said it was good to see The Detectives again and it was fun to see him back.

I love Jasper Carrott. He’s one of my favourite comedians of all time. But he is the king of reusing old material. I went to a standup show he did here in Jersey a couple of years back, and was mouthing most of his jokes as he was telling them. I suppose he’s from the old stable of standup comedians before they were big on TV, where you could use one set for years and get away with it.

To be honest most of the guests on Mock the Week have been getting away with it for years.

If he was re-using old gags it’s most likely some of those that warranted the Rob and Doug credit. They wrote for the ‘Carrott’s Lib’ series but I don’t know what else, if anything.

There’s some truth to that, but it’s more of a criticism I’d draw at the traditional comedians on tv who came to the medium after years touring clubs. Jasper came from a background of playing folk music like Billy, and comedy came from the bits they’d do inbetween songs. TV really was the making of them rather then them having an established act before starting work for the telly. Id have to go back and check dates, but in terms of reusing material shortly after it had first been seen, I don’t think he was any more guilty of it than someone around at the moment that will put there best outines on their DVD, on comedy roadshow, on comedy gala etc. He’s certainly been guilty of reusing them through the years though, going as far as going out and doing self confessed ‘best-of tours’, but he seems to get good audiences still on he rare occasion he gigs so there’s obviously still some interest for it.

I guess I’m always willing to allow him a bit more leeway than others due to the fact that he is really one of a handful of comedians in the uk that are responsible for shaping modern standup into the form it’s in now. Jasper, Billy, Dave Allen and the like don’t really get enough credit for that.

Dave Allen of course, being more sit-down than stand-up. Love that guy.

Well he’s more lie down these days.

What?! Oh come on, it’s been 7 years, and he was always doing cheeky undertaker sketches etc. Bless him. :-)
